Hutchins Co. of Clearwater, Florida, better known as Com-Pac Yachts, was founded in 1957 by W. L. "Les" Hutchins. Hutchins was a trained tool and die maker and an inventor, and he first ran a metalworking business in St. Louis that made parts for the motor industry. Around 1970 he moved into boatbuilding and asked Clark Mills to design a 16 footer, the first Com-Pac. Bob Johnson later drew the Com-Pac 19. The boats have glassfibre hulls and are laid out as small cruisers that live on a trailer. After the death of Gerry Hutchins and the retirement of Richard Hutchins, the company ceased trading on 1 May 2025.
Our model records list five designs: three open sailing boats and two small yachts, all between 4.5 and 6.15 metres long. The oldest is the Compac 16 at 4.87 metres, listed from 1971 to 1990. The COM-PAC 19 at 5.79 metres runs from 1979 to 1993. From the nineties come the COM-PAC 16 at 4.5 metres, recorded from 1990 to 1999, and the COM-PAC 23 at 6.15 metres, from 1990 to 1998 and the largest boat on the list. The Suncat 17 at 5.29 metres appears from 2003 to 2013. None of the lines reaches into recent build years, and four of the five ended before 2000.
Small trailer sailers are often stored ashore for years, which is kind to the hull but hard on the details. On a used Com-Pac, check the deck around the chainplates and the mast step for soft spots, look at the mast hinge or tabernacle if fitted and inspect the shrouds and forestay for broken strands. Windows and hatches tend to leak with age and are worth resealing. The trailer is just as important as the boat: tyres, bearings, rollers and lights should all be sound before the first trip. Spare parts can take patience now that the yard has closed, but owner groups keep much of the knowledge alive.
