Hutting Yachts started in 1975 in a small garage in Akkrum, building racing boats. In 1993 the business moved to a new yard in Makkum, where designs such as the Hutting 45 and Hutting 50 followed, and today it handles new builds, refits and its own marina. The Hutting 40 shows the yard's direction: a long-keeled cutter drawn by Dick Koopmans Sr., built in aluminium or steel for shorthanded passages. Model numbers give a rough length in feet.
Six Hutting designs appear in our model records, all sailing yachts. The Hutting 40 opens the list in 2001, followed by the 50 in 2003 and the 45 in 2014; the 52 and 54 arrived in 2017 and the 46 Explorer in 2019. All six lines reach the most recent build years. Lengths range from 12.38 metres for the Hutting 40 to 17.2 metres for the Hutting 54, with the 45 at 13.75, the 46 Explorer at 13.9, the 50 at 15.5 and the 52 at 15.8 metres.
These are passage makers rather than weekend boats, and the yard says its yachts sail from the Caribbean to the North Pole. A boat like this wants a berth with enough depth for a long keel and a winter ashore with the rig checked. Aluminium and steel hulls reward regular inspection of coatings and anodes, especially after a season in warm water.
