JCA Marine; cover, cost and conditions
JCA Marine stands for John Charnley Associates, the British firm that put the Swift 18 into production. Colin Sylvester drew the boat, which was first meant to be built in aluminium and went into series in GRP instead. JCA built the early boats, later moved to Shamrock Quay in Southampton and traded there as Swiftcraft. The business was sold in 1985; Honnor Marine in Totnes and finally Marlin International in Southampton carried on with later series. The Swift 18 is recognisable by its format: a small cabin sailer with a lifting keel and fractional rig, drawn to the French micro cupper rule, with built-in foam buoyancy and four full-length berths.
Our model records list one design: the Swift 18, entered as a sailing boat of 5.5 metres. The recorded build years run from 1979 to 1987, while the class history gives 1982 as the start of production and follows it to 1990, with the later boats known as the 300 and 400 series. No entry reaches the most recent build years. JCA Marine is therefore represented by a single small boat that gives a family room for a weekend aboard and still fits on a road trailer.
A Swift 18 is a boat for estuaries, lakes and short coastal hops, and most of its life is spent between trailer and slipway. On a used example it pays to check the lifting keel mechanism and its pivot, the wire or rope that raises it, and the keel box for weeping. The foam buoyancy should be dry and intact. Look at the trailer as closely as the boat: rollers, bearings and lights take a beating from salt water. Owners who keep the mast and rigging simple find the boat quick to rig at the ramp.

Can a Swift 18 be trailed?
Yes, for JCA Marine too: that was the idea from the start.
At 5.5 metres with a lifting keel it fits on a road trailer,
and many owners launch from a slipway rather than keep the boat on a mooring.
