The Esse comes from Josef Schuchter, a yacht builder in Stäfa on Lake Zurich in Switzerland. His yard launched the first Esse 850 in 2003, an 8.5 metre sportboat drawn by Umberto Felci and meant for a small crew of one to four, or for sailing alone. The first hull was sold in 2004, and an international class association followed in 2005. The boat is easy to pick out: a narrow hull of just 2.2 metres beam, a tall fractional rig with a high aspect sail plan and an extending bowsprit for the gennaker. Below the waterline a torpedo shaped bulb sits on a foil shaped fin, and that ballast makes up a large share of the boat's weight.

The L is the shallow water version. Instead of the racing keel with 2.20 metres of draught it carries a T keel of 1.50 metres with more ballast, together with a shorter aluminium mast and a self tacking jib.
