Worth knowing

LA Yacht- und Bootsbau GmbH; cover, cost and conditions

LA Yacht- und Bootsbau works from Waren on Lake Müritz in north-eastern Germany. The two letters stand for two first names: Lothar Fichtner, an entrepreneur, and Andreas Zehle, a master boatbuilder who had previously worked in the same town for the builder of the Christen 20 dinghy cruiser. Martin Menzner of Berckemeyer Yacht Design in Laboe drew the first boats. What sets an LA apart is the hull: it is cold-moulded from layers of okoume and African mahogany set in epoxy, then varnished so the timber stays on show. Each hull is built as two half shells joined along the keel, with a rounded turn where hull meets deck.

Our model records hold four designs, all listed as sailing yachts: the LA 850, LA 28, LA 33 and LA 35. The LA 850 starts in 2012, the other three in 2013, and all four run into the most recent build years. Lengths range from 8.5 metres for the LA 850 and LA 28 to 10.5 metres for the LA 35, with the LA 33 just short of ten metres. The LA 28 was conceived as a trailable daysailer, with a fixed keel or an optional hydraulic lifting keel, a carbon mast and boom and a Torqeedo electric motor. The LA 850 was launched alongside it as a dinghy cruiser, while the LA 35 takes the same idea up a size.

A varnished wooden hull rewards an owner who keeps an eye on it. Epoxy-saturated timber is stable, but the varnish needs renewing before the sun breaks through it, and any knock that cuts into the veneer should be sealed quickly so water stays out. On a used LA it pays to look closely at the joint along the keel line, at the deck fittings and, where fitted, at the lifting keel mechanism and its hydraulics. The electric drive keeps the bilge clean and the boat quiet, though the age of the battery is worth checking. Many of these boats are trailed between lakes and coastal waters, so the road trailer deserves the same inspection as the boat.

production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
