Marine Composite; cover, cost and conditions

Marine Composite works from Arzon at Port du Crouesty, close to the entrance of the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany. The yard is owned by Bernard d'Assignie and is known for the Bihan 6.50, a small gaff-rigged boat drawn by the French design office Finot/Conq. The idea came in 2012 from a local sailor who wanted a boat suited to his home waters: one person should be able to step the mast and sail her, and she should sit comfortably among the traditional craft of the area. Marine Composite started on the moulds in June 2015 and showed the first boat at the Paris boat show, the Nautic, that December. The hull is vacuum-infused glassfibre over a PVC foam core, and the yard makes the carbon mast, gaff and boom in house. A short mast, a gaff mainsail and classic lines over a modern hull give her away.

Our model records list one design, the Bihan 6.50, filed as a sailing boat of 6.5 metres. The entry runs from build year 2020 to 2024, although the yard launched the first boats from late 2015, so earlier hulls may well turn up under the same name. In our data the line does not reach into the most recent build years. For a boat of this size the Bihan carries some clever details: a swing keel that lifts, and a rudder blade that can be raised. Together they let her come close to a beach and go in and out over a slipway. The short mast is meant to be raised and lowered by one person without strain.

Owners of a Bihan tend to use her as a day boat for shallow bays and quick coastal hops, launching from a ramp and keeping her on a trailer. On a used boat, check the swing keel pivot and its lifting system for wear, look at the rudder stock and the lifting mechanism of the blade, and examine the carbon spars at the gaff jaws and the boom fittings. Infused foam sandwich is light and stiff, and a tap test around the keel case shows whether the core is still sound. The trailer itself deserves a look too, since it does a good part of the work.
