Worth knowing
Mariver; cover, cost and conditions
Mariver is one of the Italian yards from the early days of series-built cruising yachts. It began building the Pierrot in 1969, a boat an Italian sailing magazine counts among the first series-produced boats in Italy to become widespread. The design came from Studio Sciomachen, known for fast, seaworthy and liveable hulls. The first series measured 9.15 metres with a beam of 3.20 metres; later the hull grew to 9.25 metres with a fuller transom. The large cockpit seats six in comfort. Below there is a V-berth forward, a convertible dinette amidships with the galley opposite, and aft the heads on one side and a chart table with a berth on the other. The source says nothing about where the yard was based or about its other designs, so the story stops there.
Our model records list four designs, each with 1974 as its first entry. Three are sailing yachts: the Pierrot at 9.2 metres until 1984, the Fenicia at 11.1 metres until 1982 and the Galatea, at 12.5 metres the largest design and, with entries up to 1990, also the longest listed. The fourth is the Cocaletta, a 7-metre sailing boat recorded until 1982. Building of the Pierrot began in 1969 according to the source, while our entries only start in 1974. No line reaches later build years, so every Mariver afloat today is at least three decades old.
A yacht of this age is bought for its hull and its lines, and both need checking. Look for osmosis and for soft spots in the deck around stanchions and fittings, which on boats from the seventies have often been rebedded more than once. Chainplates and keel bolts deserve a close look, as does the rudder stock. Standing rigging that is not documented should be treated as due for renewal. Many of these boats have spent their lives in the Mediterranean sun, so check gelcoat, hatches and window seals. A survey before purchase is money well spent on any of the four designs.

For the Galatea, Pierrot, Fenicia by Mariver series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Cocaletta by Mariver series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
