Mayfly Classic Boats is a Cornish boatbuilder associated with Bryan Gibson. Its boats trace back to the Oysterman 16, which Paul Gartside designed and built in Falmouth in 1978 from three layers of 3 mm mahogany veneer laid over frames. That boat served as the plug for the mould from which several Cornish yards built Oystermen until 1992. Gibson then reworked the design into the Oystercatcher. So the Oysterman did not come from a single shed but from a small Cornish boatbuilding tradition that Mayfly carried forward. The Oystercatcher is easy to tell apart from the older Oysterman by its smaller rig, shorter bowsprit and lighter ballast. Both are compact sailing boats whose looks recall older working craft.
Our model records list four designs, all classed as sailing boats. The oldest entry is the Oysterman 16 2-Tonner at 4.88 metres from 1979. The Oysterman 22 4,5-Tonner at 6.9 metres follows from 1985, the largest design on the list, recorded until 1999. From 1991 come the Oystercatcher 16 at 4.88 metres and the Oystercatcher 20 at 5.97 metres, both until 2000. The 2-Tonner and 4,5-Tonner tags in the names separate the two Oysterman sizes. No line reaches later build years, and all four boats stay under seven metres, small enough to travel by road.
A small traditional boat lives or dies by the care it has had. On an Oysterman or Oystercatcher, check the bowsprit and its fittings, since a short spar carries real loads. Look at the ballast keel and its bolts, the rudder fittings and the condition of the spars and running rigging. Many of these boats are trailed and launched from slipways, so inspect the trailer rollers and the hull where it sits on them. With the lighter ballast of the Oystercatcher, the boat suits sheltered estuaries and coastal day sailing as much as longer coastal hops in settled weather.
