MG Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
MG stands for Marine Glass, a British yard that built glassfibre sailing yachts in the early 1980s. Its boats were meant to go quickly: cruisers that could hold their own on a race course. The lines came from Rob Humphreys, who had set up his design office in 1974. The MG 30, also listed as the MG HS30, is a half tonner with a fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder, first built in 1982. The RS34 followed from 1983, taken from the mould of the prototype Seren Wib, with a solid glassfibre hull, a lead bulb fin keel and a spade rudder. Both carry a fractional sloop rig, typical of racing boats of the time.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The MG 30 appears with build years 1981 to 1987 and a length of 9.1 metres, the RS34 with 1983 to 1989 and 10.5 metres. Neither reaches into recent build years; on our list the last boats date from 1989. Anyone buying an MG today buys a boat at least 35 years old, usually with several previous owners. The span from 9.1 to 10.5 metres marks the yard's territory: compact, quick boats of around 30 to 34 feet.
Racing yachts of the eighties were often sailed hard, so the keel matters most on a used MG. Check the keel bolts and the joint between hull and keel for signs of an old grounding, and look at the rudder bearings, especially on the RS34 with its unsupported blade. Fractional rigs depend on running backstays and well-tuned spreaders, so standing and running rigging deserve a close look. Many boats come with a stack of older racing sails; their condition says a lot about how the boat was used. A solid glassfibre hull without a core is forgiving, but osmosis checks are still worthwhile.
