Playcraft/AFC; cover, cost and conditions
Playcraft builds deck and pontoon boats in Missouri; the works are at Richland in the centre of the state and the house has been going since 1974. Its own hull development produced the Powertoon range, a pontoon boat with three tubes instead of two, which lets it carry considerably more engine power than the usual form. You recognise the boats by the flat unbroken deck without steps, the rail running all the way round and the large seating groups carried well forward; the deck boats have a solid hull instead of tubes.
Our model records list 46 Playcraft models, 43 of them motorboats and three cabin trimarans. Build years start in 2007 and run into current production. Forty six series are recorded: the Ultra Deck Cruiser in 20, 22 and 24; the FX4 Fishdeck in the same sizes; the Daytona 2100, 2200 and 2300; the Panfish 2142 and 2149; the Clipper 2000, 2400 and 2600 SRL; and the Powertoon 250 and 2300. Lengths run from 6.1 to 8.5 metres, half the models between 6.8 and 7.8 metres.
A third tube under a pontoon boat is not a small change. Two tubes carry the deck; a third one in the middle adds buoyancy where the engine load sits and lets the boat run at speeds the usual form would not hold. It also means there is more welded aluminium down there to take the first knock when the boat meets a dock.
