Plymouth Pilots; cover, cost and conditions
Plymouth Pilots builds its boats at Wixenford in Plymstock, on the edge of Plymouth in south-west England, where production has run on the same site for some fifty years. It is a small family business that sees itself as custodian of the Plymouth Pilot name, building traditionally styled coastal boats from scratch in its own workshop and shaping each one around what the buyer wants. One sale listing describes the Pilot 18 as a GRP hull with a GRP cuddy, bilge keels and a transom-hung rudder, driven by an economical diesel and made for gentle estuary trips and fishing. Bilge keels let a boat sit upright on the mud when the tide goes out, which suits the tidal creeks of the West Country.
Our model records list five designs: four motorboats and one small dinghy without a fixed boat type. The Pilot 16 at 4.9 metres and the Pilot 18 at 5.59 metres both start in 1987 and run into the most recent build years. The Pilot 24 Weekender, 7.32 metres long, was listed from 1999 to 2013, the year the Pilot 24 at 7.24 metres took over, and it continues today. The Minipram Dinghy also appears from 2013, with no length on record. Four of the five designs reach recent build years, and the whole range stays between just under five and just over seven metres.
Small, simple boats like these are often kept for decades, and a used Pilot rewards a careful look rather than a quick one. Check the bilge keels and their joins to the hull for cracks, since boats that dry out on every tide put load there. The transom-hung rudder, its pintles and the tiller fittings wear with time. An inboard diesel in a small hull should start easily, run without heavy smoke and sit in a clean, dry engine space. Boats from the mid-eighties have in some cases been re-engined, which is usually a plus when the work is documented. The trailer, if one comes with the boat, deserves the same scrutiny as the hull.
