Polimoon Cipax; cover, cost and conditions
The name Polimoon Cipax stands behind the Pioner boats from Norway. They are rotomoulded from polyethylene, the same tough plastic used for canoes and water butts, and come out of the mould in one piece with no seam between hull and deck. Cipax ran plants in several Scandinavian countries, and the Pioner 14 of 2011 was developed together with an Italian rotomoulding specialist. Pioner boats are easy to spot by their matt, through coloured surface, by their thick walls and by hulls that shrug off a knock on a rock. At the end of its life the material can be fully recycled.
Our model records list 37 designs: 29 small motorboats, two utility boats and six rigid inflatables sold as Steady. Build years start in 1971, and 13 lines reach the latest build years. The Pioner 13 runs in our records from 1972 to today. All of them stay small, from 2.25 metres for the Pioner 7 to 5.3 metres for the Pioner Multi Proff. The range includes the Pioner 8 Mini, the Pioner 10 to 15, the Pioner 14 Active and Fisher, the Pioner 16 Explorer, the Pioner 17 Flexi and the Pioner Multi. The Steady RIBs measure 2.35 to 5.2 metres.
Polyethylene is forgiving but has its own habits. It does not take glue or ordinary filler, so a deep gouge is repaired by plastic welding rather than with resin. Strong sunlight fades the colour over the years, and a cover helps where the boat lies on a lake shore all summer. The thick hull makes a Pioner heavier than a glassfibre boat of the same size, which matters on a roof rack or a light trailer. Otherwise there is little to maintain, which is exactly why these boats are found at so many holiday cabins.
