Berth, season and winter storage

A berth afloat all year round is possible here, which is exactly what makes the season a question. Policies written for a season commonly pause over the winter months, in harbour and ashore alike. Anyone who leaves the boat in the water through the winter should check which months their own cover actually runs. At the pontoon what counts is what the conditions call a duty of care: lines of adequate strength, chafe protection, a working bilge pump and a boat that is not left unchecked for months. Shore power is available, and with it the most common cause of fire at a pontoon: a charger and a battery left working unattended over the winter. Fire is covered in any tariff; a fire traced to a demonstrably improper installation is not. The nearest berth, Nabrzeże Miejskie, is less than a kilometre away. That close together you share the tight water when manoeuvring, and the most common damage is the damage another boat causes.

What this berth means for your policy

Poland does not require liability cover for private recreational use. It does apply to charter boats and commercially used craft, and harbours increasingly ask for proof through the berth contract. This berth sits in an area where severe gales are part of the year. That makes one distinction in the small print worth reading: most conditions name storm from force 8, while flooding and storm surge are a separate matter. Whether a boat that breaks free, strikes piles or pontoon, is driven ashore or sinks is covered depends on whether the wording insures accidental events at all or only a fixed list of named perils. By the coastline the berth is covered all round: from no direction does more than five kilometres of open water run towards it. A sea builds over the distance the wind has free, and here that distance is short.
