Boat insurance for Plauer See and Elde
At just over 38 square kilometres the Plauer See is the third largest lake in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, about fourteen kilometres long, up to five wide and 25 metres deep. Nothing shelters it, so a freshening breeze soon builds a proper sea, and thunderstorms cross the flat country quickly. At Plau the Müritz-Elde waterway begins: 17 locks down to Dömitz on the Elbe, a route many UK crews know from hire boat holidays.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October. Plau am See has a town harbour and marinas, with more harbours on the east and west shores and prices in the middle band. Boats winter ashore or in a shed in the region. Before crossing, check the forecast: with thunderstorms about, stay in harbour or keep close to the shore rather than cutting across.
What this means for your policy
The area falls under the Mecklenburg Lake District cruising range. The Müritz-Elde waterway is a federal waterway, and a motorboat over 15 hp needs a licence recognised in Germany, usually the ICC with CEVNI endorsement. Two questions for your policy: does the agreed range run down the Elde as far as the Elbe, and how is damage inside one of the locks treated?
