Boat insurance for Scharmützelsee
Locals call it the Brandenburg Sea, and in a blow you see why. The Scharmützelsee is about ten kilometres long, a kilometre and a half wide and nearly 30 metres deep at its deepest, lying north to south between Bad Saarow and Wendisch Rietz. Wind from either end gets the full length as fetch, and the sea it builds is more than most visitors expect on a lowland lake. A lock at Wendisch Rietz links it to the Storkow lakes and the Dahme.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October. Bad Saarow, Diensdorf and Wendisch Rietz have harbours and clubs, prices sit in the middle band and berths for larger yachts are scarce. Boats winter ashore. On an exposed pontoon, put out an extra line when a northerly or southerly gale is forecast and check your fenders are on the side the boat will be pushed onto.
What this means for your policy
The lake falls under the Berlin and Brandenburg cruising range. It is a state water rather than a federal waterway, with Brandenburg's own speed limits and shore distances for powered craft. Two questions for your policy: does it respond to storm damage your boat causes to someone else's pontoon, and does cover continue through the lock towards the Dahme?
