Worth knowing
Henzewerft; cover, cost and conditions
The Henze boatyard sits in the Sauerland hills of western Germany, a long way from any coast. A profile in the German magazine Yacht from 2010 describes a business that had then been running for 40 years, with a team of seven handling almost everything in house: metalwork, pattern making, timber and composite work. Henze is known for the Dyas, an open keelboat for two. Alongside it came cabin boats of the Unna type and one-off builds, up to a 64 foot yacht called Cheliacaroca. The yard thus stands for a mixed programme rather than a single class. At the time of that profile, a change of generation was about to take place.
Our model records list five designs: two open sailing boats and three sailing yachts. The Dyas at 7.15 metres runs from 1973 to 2011, the longest lived line of the brand. The H 24 Minitonner at 7.24 metres appears from 1981 to 1988. The yachts all date from the eighties: the H 28 at 8.8 metres from 1984 to 1992, and the H 44 at 13.56 and the H 46 at 14.03 metres, both from 1983 to 1992. None of the lines reaches into recent build years. The span from just over seven to 14 metres suits a yard that built everything from a two-man day boat to a large cruising yacht.
A Dyas lives on its trailer and in the club fleet, so look at the keel bolts and the keel to hull joint, the trailer rollers and the mast step, which take the strain of frequent rigging and unrigging. Older boats may have soft spots in the deck where fittings were bolted through. On the H 44 and H 46, now more than thirty years old, the standing rigging, chainplates and engine are the main items to check, along with osmosis on the hull and the condition of the teak. Class associations and owners' networks are a good source of advice on specific weak points before buying.

For the Dyas by Henzewerft series the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the H 28, H 44, H 46 by Henzewerft and 1 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Dyas, H 24 Minitonner by Henzewerft series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the H 28, H 44, H 46 by Henzewerft series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
