David Hillyard's yard stood in Littlehampton on the Sussex coast. He came from a family of fishermen in Rowhedge, Essex, and set up on his own in 1906, first on the east bank of the river, building dinghies. During the First World War the yard turned out lighters and whalers for the Navy. Afterwards Hillyard moved on to yachts of his own design, and in 1923 he bought the central part of Harvey's yard across the river when it came up for auction. His name stands for plain, sturdy wooden cruisers meant for families rather than for show, sized in tons from little two and a half tonners upwards. David Hillyard Ltd stopped trading early in 2009.
Our model records hold a single Hillyard design, the Moonfleet 36 sailing yacht, entered with build years from 1985 to 1996 and a length of 11 metres. The wooden tonners of the earlier decades do not appear there as separate lines. The Moonfleet 36 is one of the few glassfibre boats the yard produced, drawn by the Laurent Giles office. She has a skeg hung rudder and wheel steering, three cabins below and headroom of about 1.80 metres. That makes her a roomy cruising yacht rather than a racer. None of the entries runs into recent build years, so even the youngest hull is around thirty years old.
On a Moonfleet of this age the skeg and the rudder bearings deserve close attention, as does the wheel steering with its cables and quadrant. Glassfibre hulls from the eighties can show osmosis blisters, so a survey with moisture readings out of the water is money well spent. Look at the chainplates and the standing rigging, which may still be original. The three cabin layout suits a couple with guests or a family, and many owners use these yachts for long summer cruises or as a liveaboard base in warmer waters. Ask the seller for the engine history and for invoices for earlier work on hull and deck.
