Humlebæk Bådeværft; cover, cost and conditions
Humlebæk Bådeværft sits in the harbour of Humlebæk on the Øresund coast north of Copenhagen, a short walk from the Louisiana art museum. Boatbuilder Hermann A. Hinrichsen founded the yard in 1941. It made its name with sound fishing cutters, sturdy Greenland cutters and one-off cruising and racing sailboats in wood, and it also built mahogany sailing yachts for owners in the United States to the drawings of well known designers. The family still runs the business: Preben Hinrichsen is in charge together with his son Morten, the third generation. Day to day the work today is boatbuilding and repairs, fitting out and winter storage.
Our model records list one design, the Hinrichsen 34 sailing yacht, with build years from 1969 to 2001 and a length of 10.24 metres. According to the yard's own history, Hermann Hinrichsen and his sons Preben and Ole built the first Hinrichsen 34 in 1974. She was the yard's first glassfibre build and was conceived as a three quarter tonner under the IOR rule, a seagoing cruiser with racing roots. The earlier start year in our records differs from that, so the papers and hull number of an individual boat settle the question. Over almost three decades of building there are early and late boats with different fit out. The entry does not reach recent build years.
A Hinrichsen 34 from the IOR years has a fine bow, a powerful rig and a hull shaped by a racing rule, which makes her lively upwind and asks for an attentive crew downwind. When viewing one, check the keel bolts and the area around the keel root, the chainplates and the mast step. Deck fittings on boats of this age are often bedded for the second or third time, so look for damp in the core around them. Many owners still race these yachts at club level in Danish waters, so sails and running rigging can be well used. A yard history with invoices from Humlebæk adds real confidence.
