Meta Chantiers; cover, cost and conditions
META builds metal yachts in Tarare, in the Rhône department of France, and has done so there since 1963. The story starts in 1961, when Jean Fricaud, then working in Chauffailles, agreed to build a steel ketch for Bernard Moitessier: Joshua. Damien II followed in the same period. In 1977 Fricaud and the naval architect Michel Joubert developed the Strongall process, which uses aluminium plate two to three times thicker than in conventional boatbuilding. META boats are known less by a numbering system than by their names: Joshua, Damien II, Dalu, Globe-Flotteur, Voyageur and Raider.
Our model records list 31 META models: 25 sailing yachts, five motor yachts and one cabin catamaran, the Cat-Flotteur 44. Build years run from 1966 to 1999, and none is in current production. Lengths range from 7.9 to 21.5 metres, with half between 11 and 14.3 metres. The 12.07 metre Joshua is recorded from 1966. The Dalu series runs from the 9.35 metre Dalu 31 to the 17.25 metre Dalu 57, the Globe-Flotteur models from 10 to 14.8 metres, and there are the Classic 42 and 51 ketches. The motor yachts are the Raider 26 and 43 and the Voyageur 47 and 48, while the longest boat is the 21.5 metre Sainte Anne 65.
Yachts like these are built with long passages in mind. With build years reaching back to the 1960s, value rests on the metal: plate thickness measurements, the state of the coating, any corrosion around through-hulls, keel and deck fittings, and the insulation behind the linings. Then comes the ocean gear: self-steering, rig, sails and engine.

Yes, for Meta Chantiers too: Jean Fricaud built the steel ketch Joshua for Moitessier in 1961,
before the yard settled in Tarare in 1963.
