The TIDE 34 comes from Maritime Faserverbundtechnik Haring in Emden, a company whose background is the production of complex composite parts. It makes components for the automotive industry, for superyachts, wind turbines and submarines, and with the TIDE range it builds sailing boats under its own name. The TIDE 34 was drawn by the designer Marc-Oliver von Ahlen. Its models were the centreboard cruisers of the 1940s that sailed on the Elbe and in the Wadden Sea, and both hull lines and coachroof deliberately recall those classics. Beneath the retro look sits a light GRP sandwich, with the yard placing particular weight on a laminate that is both light and very strong. The sailing press has also presented a larger TIDE 36 and a small tender, the TIDE 8.

This lets the TIDE 34 dry out on the flats without legs, and the boat is designed to be trailed. Despite its classic lines it offers room both in the large cockpit and below deck.
A boat built to dry out needs a particular kind of care. The ballasted centreboard, its pivot, the lifting tackle and the case deserve an inspection every season, because sand and shell grit find their way into every gap. Taking the ground on hard sand or mud also marks the bottom of the hull, so a look at the laminate and the antifouling after the season tells a lot. Trailering brings its own checklist: rollers, supports, bearings and lighting. On a used TIDE 34, ask how often the boat was dried out and on what kind of seabed, and check the sandwich laminate for impact damage.
