Boat insurance for Bay of Lübeck and Fehmarn
The bay opens to the north-east. In westerlies it lies under the lee of the coast; in an onshore north-easterly there is no shelter at all, the sea runs right up to the beaches and a north-easterly gale piles water into the bay. On the Trave fairway up to Lübeck the big ferries keep to the middle and can hardly give way, so small craft stay on the right-hand side and listen on VHF 13. Off Fehmarn the tunnel works have closed areas that move with the job.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October and berths sit in the upper price band, because space is short all along the German Baltic coast: the ancora Marina at Neustadt holds about 1,400 of them, the Passathafen on the Priwall 490. Boats come ashore for the winter. The main precaution is in the box berth: lines long enough for the boat to rise when a north-easterly pushes the water in.
What this means for your policy
The bay belongs to the Baltic cruising range, even for a boat that never goes further than Travemünde and Fehmarn. Two questions for your own policy: is high water at the berth named as a peril of its own or only wind above a stated force, and how is contact with a mooring pile, a pontoon or a channel buoy treated?
