Context
How training works in Italy
Italy examines in theory and in practice, and the practical test is no formality: berthing, man overboard and basic navigation are assessed on the water. Training takes correspondingly longer and costs correspondingly more, and the patente nautica is well regarded internationally as a result.
New since 2026 is the patentino D1, a middle step for engines up to 85 kW within six nautical miles by day, available from the age of 16. Visitors regularly underestimate the six mile line, which is the point at which an unlicensed passage becomes a licensed one, whatever the engine.

Foreign certificates are recognised for visitors. For boating beyond six nautical miles the authorities expect a certificate that covers it.
What the charter base asks for
Italian bases check carefully because the coastguard checks carefully. A boat above 40.8 hp is not handed over without the matching certificate.
