Context

How training works in New Zealand

New Zealand requires no licence for pleasure boats, and that is debated in the country itself. The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has criticised a system that relies on boaties knowing the rules without ever having to show it. The rules apply all the same: break the Maritime Rules or a regional bylaw and you pay.

Training is in the hands of Coastguard Boating Education, a training establishment registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority. Day Skipper is the start, Boatmaster the next step, and the radio certificate comes on top. The Boatmaster is worth something across the Tasman too: it can be transferred to a New South Wales licence.

Recognition, charter, cover

What the certificate means outside the classroom

Recognition abroad

As New Zealand requires no licence, recognition is not a question for the state. What a charter company wants to see is up to the company.

What the charter base asks for

The charter company asks for proof, not the state. Ask before you book what it wants to see, including the radio certificate.

What matters for cover

Whether New Zealand waters fall within the cruising area of a policy is a question for the policy wording, not the certificate. Check before the passage.
