Duration and minimum age
Day Skipper is five days of theory and five days of practical; Yachtmaster considerably more. From 12 to 16 depending on the RYA course.

How training works in the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom requires no certificate for private pleasure craft and nevertheless runs the best known training system in Europe. The RYA teaches in steps, from Competent Crew through Day Skipper to Yachtmaster, and its register of training centres reaches far beyond its own coast: there are RYA centres in Croatia, Greece and Spain too.
An RYA course is heavily practical, five days aboard for the Day Skipper being the rule rather than the exception. If the next passage is in a country that insists on a state document, add the ICC. The water itself is the real teacher: tidal range, current and traffic separation schemes make the Channel one of the most demanding training grounds in Europe, and that is why a certificate earned there is worth something.

Do you run a boating school?
A training boat operates commercially, with a different person at the helm every hour and an instructor who carries the liability. That calls for its own arrangement, not a private policy.
