Boat insurance for Carinthian lakes
Wörthersee, Ossiacher See, Millstätter See, Faaker See and Weissensee lie in narrow valleys running east to west on the southern side of the Alps. In summer the weather comes off the slopes rather than off the water: heat thunderstorms build over the mountains and drop onto the lake with minutes of warning. In July 2025 squalls crossed the Wörthersee and hit Velden hardest. Bathing zones off Klagenfurt are closed to all craft.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from May to September and berths sit in the upper band because they are scarce: on the Wörthersee a boathouse or a jetty changes hands with the property. Boats come ashore for the winter, since the Weissensee freezes every year and the Wörthersee every few years. Private combustion engines are capped lake by lake, so a petrol boat needs one of the limited permits.
What this means for your policy
These lakes belong to the Austrian cruising range, which a contract written for the Solent or the Irish Sea will not reach. Two questions for the contract: is the lake the boat actually lies on named, and what applies in the months it sits in a boathouse or on a trailer? Separately, a boat on Austrian public water needs official registration, and from 4.4 kilowatts the helm needs a certificate of competence.
