The channel between Piombino and the island carries a traffic separation scheme with lanes laid down for shipping, and in the precautionary area the larger ships entering and leaving port have priority over pleasure craft. In summer the ferries to Elba follow close on one another. South of it the national park begins: a belt of one mile around Pianosa is closed to navigation, lying and anchoring, and Montecristo takes a permit.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October, berths sit in the upper price band and want booking ahead in high season. The bay of Portoferraio is sheltered by its own shape, while Marina di Campo lies behind a short breakwater and stays open to seaward. Buoy fields off Portoferraio and Marina di Campo take the place of the anchor. For the winter the boat goes ashore, into a hall on the island or near Piombino and Scarlino.
