Between Vila Real and Lagos the coast is low and accessible; further west it becomes steep and ends at Cape São Vicente, where wind and sea increase noticeably. The river mouths of the Guadiana and the Arade have bars that break in a swell. That is where this area's more serious damage happens.

Berths, season and winter storage
The Algarve works year round, with berths in the middle price band. Many German owners winter here, because the climate is mild and the yards affordable. Winter gales from the south west occur and push swell into the marinas.
What this means for your policy
The area belongs to the cruising range for the European Atlantic coast. Continuing to the Canaries or Madeira leaves that range and needs its own entry. Also check whether cover applies while the boat lies unattended in the marina for months.

Does cover apply when the boat lies unattended in the marina for months?
Yes. Hull cover does not require anyone to be aboard and knows no time window. For theft there is one requirement once the boat is ashore: on an unenclosed yard or in an unlocked building we do not pay.
Do I need a separate entry to carry on to the Canaries or Madeira?
Yes, the European Atlantic coast range ends before that; the Canaries and Madeira are a range of their own. Adding it costs nothing with us, and Premium covers six weeks a year beyond the agreed range anyway.
The Guadiana and Arade bars break in a swell: which tariff pays what?
If the boat grounds on the bar, strands or capsizes, those are accident events and covered from Basis-Plus. The Basis tariff, a partial hull cover, includes none of them. Report a grounding even without visible damage and the inspection costs are covered with no deductible.
