Boat insurance for Grado and Lignano
This water has two faces: outside the open Gulf of Venice, inside the lagoon of Marano and Grado, shallow and cut by buoyed channels. There is little water beside the piles, the channels silt up, and charted depths at the entrances can no longer be relied on. Add the bora out of the north east, which in winter gusts to hurricane force and builds a short, steep sea. South of Grado lie the shallow banks of the Banco d'Orio.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October and berths sit in the middle price band. The approaches to Lignano and Grado are dredged, but do not trust the chart: ask the harbour master for today's depth and go in on a rising tide rather than against the ebb. In winter boats stay afloat or come ashore; the yards at Lignano and Aprilia Marittima have cranes, travel lifts and covered space.
What this means for your policy
The area falls under the cruising range for Italy, Sardinia and Sicily, which a policy written for the Solent or the Irish Sea will not reach, and a Croatian range does not take in the Italian lagoons. Two questions for the contract: are inspection costs after a grounding paid even when no visible damage remains, and is it provided for that the boat stands ashore in someone else's hall through the winter?
