Lake Como
The lake sits in a narrow alpine trough and splits into three arms; at 410 metres it is the deepest in Italy. The wind runs to a clock: the Tivano from the north in the morning, the Breva from the south in the afternoon. Thunderstorms send gusts out of the side valleys that far exceed the background wind. Car ferries cross constantly between Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio, and a five knot limit applies within 150 metres of the shore.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October and berths sit in the upper price band. Permanent moorings are scarce: the larger marinas keep waiting lists and the small village harbours are mostly unattended. Many boats lie on a buoy and come ashore for the winter. If you leave yours on a buoy through the winter, have the chain and shackles checked first.
What this means for your policy
Lake Como falls under the cruising range for the Italian lakes, so a policy written for British coastal or inland waters will not reach it. Two questions for the contract: does it expressly allow a permanent buoy mooring or an unattended village harbour, and does the berth on record still match reality if the boat winters in Italy?
