Between the two islands lie the Freus, a narrow passage with islets such as Espalmador and Espardell and places where only a few metres of water stand over sand and seagrass. Easterly and westerly winds set a current through the gap, and what looks flat in the morning turns short and choppy by the afternoon. Ferry traffic is heavy. The anchorages open to the east and south, so an onshore swell turns a quiet bay into a lee shore.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October. Berths sit in the top price band and go weeks ahead in high season, so book before leaving home. There is no frost, many boats stay afloat, and yards for ashore storage are on Ibiza. Buoys in the Ses Salines park must be booked on the morning of arrival; anchoring on seagrass is banned and holds poorly in any case.
What this means for your policy
Ibiza and Formentera fall under the cruising range for the Spanish Balearics; a policy written for home waters and a Channel crossing does not reach here. Two questions for the contract: is damage at anchor and on a mooring included without an extra clause, and does the wording allow the boat to stay in Spain the year round, including the months when nobody checks on her?
