Boat insurance for Istria and Kvarner
Off the west coast of Istria the summer pattern is a thermal breeze from the west or north west that fills in during the afternoon. The Kvarner behind it is another matter: the bora falls off the Velebit range in gusts far above the background wind and with almost no warning, hardest in the Velebit channel, the Senjska vrata and the Vinodol channel. The jugo from the south east builds more slowly and brings swell. Shipping for Rijeka crosses the area.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October and berths sit in the middle price band: the north is densely served by marinas, on average cheaper than southern Dalmatia, and hard standing is easier to find here than further south. Wintering ashore is therefore the norm. If you leave the boat afloat, rig the lines for bora and renew any chafed section first, because that is where the classic storm claim starts.
What this means for your policy
Istria and the Kvarner belong to the Croatian Adriatic cruising range, which a policy written for home or Channel waters will not reach. Two questions for the contract: does it name the marina the boat actually lies in, and does it allow the boat to stay abroad all year? Separately, Croatia wants a foreign boat registered on arrival, accepts the ICC and RYA certificates, and asks for the VHF operator's certificate.
