Boat insurance for The Lower Elbe and Hamburg
It is about 55 nautical miles from Hamburg down to the estuary, and the tide sets the timetable: the mean range is a little over three and a half metres, the ebb runs hard, and a passage downstream is planned around the stream, not the clock. Through the port you share the fairway with ferries and large container ships, and the wash is considerable. The sheltered spots in the side channels behind the islands are often only safe to reach near high water.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October and berths sit in the middle price band. The city puts the surge season from mid September to the end of March: in 1976 the St. Pauli gauge stood at 6.45 metres above datum, in 1962 at 5.70, and in November 2023 the fish market flooded at 3.62. Glückstadt is where you wait for water on the way to Cuxhaven. A boat left afloat for the winter needs someone who checks the lines.
What this means for your policy
This falls under the cruising range for the Elbe, Weser and Danube; the estuary and Helgoland need the North Sea range too, and a policy for home waters reaches neither. Two questions for the contract: is damage at the berth included without an extra clause, even where the pontoon or the piles give way and the water comes over the quay, and does it say the boat lies in a tidal river and may touch bottom?
